Fire Severity-Mediated Dynamics of the Southwestern Alberta Foothills | Webinar

When:
Wednesday, October 7, 2020 - 11:00am
Cost:
FREE
Description:

This webinar will share results of a multi-year study to better understand the fire regime of the southeastern Foothills of Alberta. We detail patterns of fire frequency, severity and age structural conditions for two distinct forest zones, lodgepole pine/aspen and Douglas-fir, over a broad region extending from the U.S. border to Banff National Park over the period 1750-1940. We discuss key ecological insights about the dynamics of fire-sensitive lodgepole pine/aspen forests under the frequent historical fire regime in the broader framework of projected fire-driven tipping points and the role that indigenous fire use may have played in shaping the historical regime of frequent fires.
