A Whole Landscape Approach to Ecosystem Based Management

Join Kylie McLeod from Ducks Unlimited Canada on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at 10am MT for a presentation on fire behaviour in wetlands.

Abstract

Over its history, the Healthy Landscapes Program has focused considerable attention on understanding natural range of variation and landscape patterns in upland forests with priorities, projects, and language reflecting the needs of the forest management sector. However, recognizing the interconnectedness of all boreal ecosystems, the complexity of contemporary threats such as climate change and biodiversity loss, and the need for diverse perspectives to develop solutions to these challenges, there is interest in expanding the HLP’s approach to consider all parts of the landscape. This more inclusive approach is also necessary to achieve the HLP’s definition of ecosystem-based management that focuses on the health and resilience of entire ecosystems. The Whole Landscape Approach to Ecosystem Based Management project addressed two objectives to support expanding the HLP’s approach: (1) develop a working definition of ‘whole landscape’ and a high-level landscape classification scheme for use by the HLP, and (2) conduct a literature review summarizing the current state of wetland knowledge as it related to ecosystem-based management topics and create a road map identifying knowledge gaps and potential project and collaboration opportunities for the HLP. This webinar will provide an overview of the definition and classification system, key findings from the literature review, and an introduction to the living road map.
