The Biologist will be part of a team working on applied research questions linked to moose and other ungulates in Alberta. The Biologist will lead a project building multi-scale habitat selection/occupancy models. The position consists of desk-based work (data analysis, report writing) as well as travel and engagement with shareholders, project partners, and Indigenous communities, and fieldwork often in remote locations. The Biologist must be an effective problem-solver, be capable of working in a small team, managing their own research, and managing their own time to meet project deliverables. The Biologist will work under the supervision of a Senior Biologist and Program Lead. There will also be opportunities to develop your own research ideas and analysis approaches that fall within the project scope.
The position is based in Hinton, Alberta, 20 minutes east of Jasper National Park, and 2½ hours west of Edmonton. Hinton, set amidst the stunning scenery of the Alberta Rockies, is a modern community of 10,000 in the heart of a four-season recreational paradise. Our region offers outstanding mountain biking, climbing, hiking, and skiing opportunities, as well as plenty of arts and cultural activities.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate a collaborative research project, under the supervision and mentorship of a Senior Biologist and Program Lead
- Data management of GPS collar data and camera data
- Build habitat selection/occupancy models
- Work with GIS Services and project partners to collate and integrate relevant spatial data into models
- Work with the Indigenous Relations Coordinator to maintain existing partnerships with Indigenous communities and to develop partnerships with new communities
- Communicate results via peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, presentations at conferences and meetings
- Work with the fRI Research Communications and GIS Services staff to produce additional communications products (e.g. story maps, infographics, webinars)
- Travel to meet with project partners, shareholders, and Indigenous communities to develop the research project and to regularly share research results
- Conduct fieldwork in rugged locations to carry out vegetation assessments and deploy remote cameras in all weather conditions
- Assist with training and supervision of field technicians
Essential Job Qualifications
- Master’s degree in ecology, wildlife biology, or a related discipline with a minimum of one year of related experience
- Experience with data management, databases, working with GPS collar and camera data
- Demonstrated experience analyzing GPS and camera data in R, e.g., RSFs, SSFs, iSSAs, occupancy modelling
- Comfortable working with spatial data in ArcGIS and R, including mapping and analysis
- Able to analyze and report on complex ecological data sets
- Record of scientific writing including reports and peer reviewed publications (co-author acceptable)
- Demonstrated oral communication skills, e.g., presentations at conferences, technical meetings
- Strong organizational skills
- Proven problem-solving skills and ability for independent decision-making
- Able to meet strict deadlines and willing to occasionally work outside of work hours
- Valid First Aid and CPR by start date
- Valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence or other provincial/territorial equivalency, with a minimum of 3-years driving experience and can provide a current driver’s abstract that meets the requirements of our insurance provider
- Eligible to work in Canada, i.e. citizen or permanent resident with an open valid work permit for the duration of the position
Desirable Job Qualifications
- Familiarity with the field of forest sciences
- Experience working in remote locations
- Lead author on peer-reviewed publications
- Experience working with diverse project partners including governments, NGOs and Indigenous communities

Details
Salary: $65,598 – $83,908, dependent on education and experience.
Hours: 37.5 hours week
Duration: 2-year term, with possibility of extension
