Research areas include caribou, grizzly bear, and native trout conservation, forest and freshwater ecology, wildfire and mountain pine beetle. Established in 1992, we are located in Hinton near the Rocky Mountains, which provides our dedicated team with a scenic home-base for outdoor adventures of all kinds.
Job Description
Reporting to the Executive Director, the position primarily involves financial accounting work conducted with considerable autonomy. The Bookkeeper is responsible for creating and maintaining reliable accounting processes, preparing monthly financial statements for the Executive Director and Research Program Leads, and quarterly reports for the Board. The Bookkeeper should be experienced with Canadian banking and non-profit organizations. The Bookkeeper must work and communicate effectively with all staff, including the administration team, scientists, and the Board of Directors.
Duties
- Complete all accounting transactions in a timely and accurate manner, including journal entries and accounts receivables/payables
- Manage balance sheets and profit/loss statements
- Process GST returns
- Prepare and issue research funding invoices for stakeholders and associations with direction from the Program Leads
- Track the organization’s capital assets
- Manage various accounts including insurance, telephone and internet services
- Prepare financial reports for the Board, funders, management and Program Leads
- Communicate with the Board Treasurer on various matters as needed
- Liaise with financial auditors in preparation of year-end financial statements
- Effectively communicate with Research Program Leads and streamline accounting processes
- Serve as primary contact for third party agencies (CRA, WCB, and other funding agencies) as required
- Participation in internal meetings as required
- Liaise with fRI Research’s financial institutions as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of experience performing bookkeeping
- A Diploma in accounting, finance or business-related field is preferred, but an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Proficiency in using accounting software such as QuickBooks
- Knowledge of accounting in the non-profit sector is considered an asset
- Strong understanding of financial accounting principles and practices
- Ability to analyze and interpret financial statements and prepare reports

- Strong ability to exercise professional judgment and perform duties with minimal supervision
- Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills
- Excellent knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications
- Strong attention to detail with good analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent time management skills while maintaining accuracy and a high degree of quality
- Heightened level of integrity, ethics, and maintaining confidentiality
- Strong interpersonal skills to encourage and foster a positive and healthy work environment
- Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
Location
This full-time position is based in Hinton. Some moving allowance may be offered to cover relocation costs

Position Type: Full-Time Regular
Hours of work: 37.5 hours per week
