The Western Mensurationists are an informal expert group of forest mensurationists, biometricians and practitioners from all over North America that meet annually to discuss issues relating to measuring forest resources. This year was the first time that the group met in Alberta, and the Alberta forestry community was excited to be hosting the event. The meeting, held in Banff, was of particular interest to FRI researchers and practitioners involved in the measurement of forest resources in the Alberta Foothills Region. FRI contributed through 2 of its programs:
- The Alberta Forest Growth Organization (AFGO) provided funding in support of the meeting;
- The Foothills Growth and Yield Association (FGYA) commissioned Dick Dempster (FGYA Research and Development Associate) to speak on the measurement and prediction of forest regeneration in the Alberta Foothills.
The FGYA took this opportunity to share for the first time with the international forestry community recent findings and challenges being addressed by the FGYA concerning reforestation of the Foothills forests in a changing climate. “The meeting has greatly helped us in soliciting feedback and ideas from other jurisdictions and experts” says Dr. Dempster. Other talks about Alberta forest growth and yield were given by researchers from the University of Alberta and Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. Several Alberta organizations contributed by presenting posters: the Alberta Mixedwood Management Association, University of Alberta, Foothills Growth and Yield Association, and Canadian Forest Service.
