Job description
The successful applicant will be part of a team working on applied research questions linked to caribou. They will be involved in aspects of the Caribou Program and need to be comfortable carrying out complex statistical analysis (using R), working with GPS collar data, camera data, vegetation data, and spatial data (R, ArcGIS), working on multiple concurrent research projects, and preparing reports and peer-reviewed publications under strict deadlines. In addition, the selected individual will be skillful at collaborating with biologists and co-workers from a variety of backgrounds and with diverse skill sets, will be comfortable supervising and managing field crews, will be willing to periodically work outside of work hours as fieldwork or fiscal deadlines require, and will be comfortable working in remote field settings.
Essential Job Qualifications
- A Masters or PhD in a related discipline including a minimum of three years experience in ecological studies
- Experience with data management, databases, working with GPS collar and camera data
- Demonstrated experience analyzing GPS and camera data in R – RSFs, SSFs, iSSAs, occupancy modelling, etc.
- Comfortable working with spatial data in ArcGIS and R, including mapping and analysis
- Able to analyze and report on complex ecological data sets
- Proven record of scientific writing including reports and peer reviewed publications
- Strong oral and written communication skills, and able to explain complex scientific data
- Recent grant writing experience
- Proficient designing field data collection protocols and carrying out field work in challenging field conditions
- The ability to meet strict production deadlines; willing to occasionally work outside of work hours
- Valid First Aid
- Eligible to work in Canada
- Full clean driving licence, with minimum 3-years driving record
Desirable Job Qualifications
- Experience managing and carrying out field season preparation and logistics; supervisory experience with field crews
- Experience presenting research at academic conferences and at technical and partner meetings
- Experience with wildlife radio telemetry and related equipment
- Comfortable and proficient with quads, and 4 wheel-drive vehicles
- Advanced Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder
- Knowledge of large ungulate anatomy and/or wildlife necropsy
- Comfortable and proficient with firearms

Salary: $70,241.70 – $84,290.04 ($36.02 – $43.23/hr), 37.5 hours week
Duration: 2-year term (possible extension beyond 2 years based on performance and funding)
Start date: January 2024 (an earlier start date is negotiable)
Location: Hinton, Alberta
