Gaurav went to the University of British Columbia for his undergraduate degree in biology followed by a master’s in zoology, where he partnered with a European organization to study how ungulate movements were affected by different agricultural practices. After graduating, he went to Kenya to contribute to a spotted hyena project, looking at their behaviour and social hierarchy.
On the team, Gaurav’s primary work is on Theme 2 of the Moose Research Initiative, where he is modeling moose movements in relation to caribou. That work began in 2024 with models in west-central Alberta that found forest age and types that were important for moose habitat selection. Gaurav will build similar models in northeast Alberta, as well as finer-scale models to characterize connectivity corridors and movement.
