Project Update: fRI Caribou Program winter fieldwork

The second season of fecal collection is drawing to a close. As part of projects funded by SFI and FRIAA we are using non-invasive monitoring, via collection of caribou feces, to determine health (pathogens) and assess hormone levels (stress, pregnancy) in caribou herds in west-central Alberta. We have a freezer full of samples that will be processed in the laboratory this summer.

Thank you to the staff that helped out in the field with this work including field assistant Leonie Brown and volunteer Paul Kuchma (who also took some of these amazing pictures). We are particularly grateful to Steve Wotton of Peregrine Helicopters not only for his exceptional flying skills but also for his willingness to get stuck in and help us with sampling.
