Meet Kate Marouelli

I am the newest biologist in the Water and Fish Program. My project focuses on synthesizing available data and traditional knowledge into recommendations for Arctic Grayling recovery within the traditional land use area of Swan River First Nation. My science career started as a research assistant for the Catchment and Wetlands Sciences Research Group at the University of Alberta. Most of my time there was spent focusing on a project looking at the implications of permafrost thaw on water chemistry downstream of permafrost peatlands. Through this project, I was fortunate enough to work in and with First Nations communities within Treaty 8 and Treaty 11 territory.

I am excited to do interesting and meaningful work alongside Swan River First Nations and to learn more about how to better incorporate traditional knowledge into aquatic research and management practices.

I spend most of my spare time enjoying the outdoors. For the past few years, I have been getting back into skiing, rock climbing and hiking. I am stoked to explore the outdoors in and around Hinton!
