Here’s a field update from the fRI Caribou Program’s Hinton crew:
Kelsey and Jillian had an eventful and animal sighting filled day this shift. They were lucky to spot three young female caribou early one morning grazing in the ditch just off of HWY40, seemingly unfazed by the busyness of the highway traffic. Later that same day, working just south east of Grande Cache, the crew passed a black bear browsing in an old pine cut-block with her three young cubs. Frantically trying to catch a picture of them, the crew watched as the mother caught wind of them and shuffled her cubs off into the trees to safety. Needless to say that on a day like that the upsides of doing fieldwork in west-central Alberta were clear to see.
