On May 11, the field crew had a training day at Cache Percotte for the summer grizzly bear population surveys (1, 2, 3). Assembling gear, learning safety protocols, programing sat phones, hair snag site selection and setup, sampling, and identifying grizzly bear hair were all covered in a jam-packed morning.
Oh and we were also joined by Nikki Heim from Alberta Parks who brought some trailcams. Since we’re in the area anyway, we agreed to set up their cameras at some of our sites in BMA 4 while we are at it. It’s a great win-win partnership. We get some extra info about activity at our hair snag sites, and they don’t have to make separate trips to setup and check some of their trailcams.
