Controlling Mountain Pine Beetle While Maintaining Caribou Forage

Land managers must juggle multiple values, and face tradeoffs from most options available to them. To help find a balance between controlling the mountain pine beetle epidemic and maintaining caribou habitat, the Caribou Program looked at alternative MPB control strategies. We found that single tree cut and burn activities could offer a win-win by reducing MPB spread without reducing terrestrial lichen forage for caribou.
