This is the second Alberta Native Trout Science Workshop / Gathering, with the last occurring in 2023. Building on the success of the first workshop, we aim to again create an event for people interested in fish and fish habitat to share research, knowledge, questions, and recovery ideas. We hope the structure of this event will facilitate the creation of connections between people and organizations interested in recovering native fish, with a focus on native trout within Alberta.
The event is structured with the objectives of:
- Providing awareness of work that is being conducted throughout Alberta and North America on native fishes;
- To have focused presentations, information sharing, discussions and breakout sessions related to concerns / themes faced by researchers, the public, practitioners, industry, and resource managers related to recovery of fish and fish habitat;
- Provide an open and organic gathering space to facilitate connections for people interested in fish recovery.
Similar to the previous workshop (2023 proceedings) we will be publishing proceedings from the event to document the event’s learnings and act as a reference for future generations of native trout fanatics.
Potential themes
Potential themes include cumulative effects, climate change, non-native species interactions, angling, genetics, habitat, research advances, cows and fish, forestry and fish, communication and outreach, monitoring threats.
Additionally, four 2.5-hour concurrent breakout sessions will also occur related to:
- Use of cumulative effects models,
- Policy related to working around water,
- Use of new tools developed from LiDAR,
- Indigenous knowledge and teachings related to water and fish.
