In February 2023, the Water and Fish Program and the Government of Alberta’s Office of the Chief Scientist co-sponsored a workshop on trout science. The two-and-a-half day event was packed with over 40 scientific talks on a broad set of issues facing Alberta’s native trout populations. The proceedings from this event, including extended abstracts to the talks, the agenda, and other information are now available.

About the Workshop
Planning for this event began in 2022 when Dr. Ben Kissinger, then at the University of Calgary and now the Water and Fish Program Lead, approached Dr. Andy Paul in the Office of the Chief Scientist. It had been over 20 years since the last big fish and fish habitat conference, and Kissinger recognized that this was a critical moment for native trout in the province.
As well as proposing and helping to organize the event, Kissinger also served as an editor, presenter, session facilitator, and co-author on five of the included studies. Other organizers represented the Office of the Chief Scientist, fRI Research, the University of Alberta, the Alberta Conservation Association, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Parks Canada, Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, Trout Unlimited Canada, and the University of Calgary.
